Born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island on January 17, 1965, Phil Thornton entered the teaching profession in 1988, initially as a long term substitute teacher in four area school districts. Dr. Thornton spent several years in the classroom as a High School History teacher. He also coached the girls’ cross country and track & field teams.
Dr. Thornton’s educational administration experience includes the Assistant Principal position at Exeter-West Greenwich High School, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the ExeterWest Greenwich School District, the Assistant Superintendent position at the Chariho Regional School District, the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning at the North Kingstown School District, Interim Superintendent of Schools for NKSD in 2008, and Superintendent of Schools for NKSD from March of 2009 to July of 2011.
Dr. Thornton earned a Bachelor's Degree in American Studies from Colby College in May of 1987, a Masters Degree in Education Administration from Providence College in May of 1993, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Johnson & Wales University in May of 2003.
