High School & Post-Secondary Planning Timeline

 

9th Grade

  • Create a WAY TO GO RI Account and begin working on your ILP and exploring career options

  • Become involved in a club, sport, activity and/or leadership position

  • Learn graduation requirements and how credits are earned

  • Check out scholarships

  • Review your academic progress on your Student Portal Account

  • If you are interested in attending a vocation program, learn the requirements for Woonsocket Career and Technical Center

  • Meet with your counselor

  • Update E-Portfolio

10th Grade

  • Register to take the PSAT that is given in October

  • Start visiting colleges/technical schools

  • Check out scholarships

  • Continue updating your Way To Go RI account and ILP.

  • Continue to be involved in clubs, sports, activities, and/or leadership positions

  • Review your academic progress on your Student Portal Account

  • Explore Advanced Placement opportunities

  • If you are interested in playing sports in college, register with the NCAA Clearinghouse

  • Meet with your counselor

  • Update E-Portfolio

11th Grade

Fall

  • Begin to develop a plan for after high school- college, military service, work, training, etc.

  • Register to take the PSAT in October as this is the year to qualify for National Merit standing

  • Attend College and/or Career Fairs

  • Check on your academic progress in Student Portal

  • Check out scholarships

Spring

  • Attend College and/or Career Fairs

  • Visit college campuses

  • Take ACT and/or SAT tests

  • Learn about admissions deadlines and requirements for schools

  • Continue updating your Way To Go RI account and ILP

  • Create a resume

  • Check out scholarships

  • Update E-Portfolio

  • Take NECAP exams Meet with your counselor in the spring

  • Verify your transcript is correct

  • Complete Service Learning by May

  • Talk to coaches and the athletic departments of your favorite schools to find out about athletic scholarships

  • Meet with your counselor

Summer

  • Continue to visit colleges/technical schools and narrow list of potential schools

  • Write some sample essays during the summer before the senior year

  • Check out scholarships

12th Grade

Fall

  • Ensure you have met graduation requirements

  • Retake SAT/ACT if needed

  • Apply to colleges and send transcripts

  • Ask teachers to write letters of recommendation at least a month before they are due

  • Attend College and/or Career Fairs

  • Apply for scholarships

  • Learn about Financial Aid (FAFSA and CSS Profile)

  • Request your FAFSA pin (parents & students)

  • Check your academic progress on Student Portal

  • Retake NECAP exams if you scored a 1 or below

  • Meet with your counselor

Spring

  • Complete FAFSA after January 1

  • Apply for scholarships

  • Check your academic progress on Student Portal

  • Update and present E-Portfolio

  • Send admissions and housing deposit to college

  • Make appropriate contacts for military service, union apprenticeships, etc.

  • Complete Senior Survey form in June so transcripts can be mailed to the appropriate school or agency

  • Send a thank you note to the teachers who wrote you recommendations.
