THE CUMBERLAND SCHOOL DEPARTMENT CURRICULUM
A TIME OF TRANSITION
The Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and 34 other state departments of education, as well as the Cumberland Public Schools, are participating in a federal education initiative called Race To The Top (RTTT).
This initiative involves a transition from curriculum based on Rhode Island Standards to curriculum based on Common Core State Standards, which will be followed by all states involved in RTTT. Furthermore, assessing students’ grade level knowledge of these standards will no longer be based on the New England Comprehensive Assessment Program (NECAP). When this curriculum transition is completed, student progress towards grade level proficiency will be assessed using a testing instrument called the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).
Please refer to the following two charts which outline this transition process.
